TOMRA, a Norwegian global manufacturing technology leader, commissioned Nordic Sustainability to develop a climate transition plan, designed to guide the company towards achieving its net-zero target.
The brief
TOMRA’s greenhouse gas inventory underwent rigorous review to meet the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) standards, achieving validated short-term and net-zero targets. Based on the identified emission hotspots and internal workshops, we developed a comprehensive climate transition plan outlining time-bound actions, resource allocation, and emission reduction potential. To ensure effective rollout and stakeholder communication, we have prepared detailed summaries for each initiative.
Our approach
With 23 decarbonisation initiatives identified, 6 for Scope 1 and 2, and 17 for Scope 3, TOMRA’s SBTI near-term and net-zero targets have been approved.
Firstly, the greenhouse gas inventory for TOMRA’s business units was reviewed to meet SBTi’s Corporate Net-Zero standard, ensuring at least 95% coverage for Scope 1 & 2 emissions and 90% for Scope 3 emissions. This review further verified that the data quality was adequate to support effective decarbonisation measures.
Leveraging identified emission hotspots and SBTi guidelines, TOMRA’s both short-term and net-zero targets were modelled and submitted for SBTi approval.
Additionally, a collaborative series of workshops with key internal stakeholders helped shape the climate transition plan. While TOMRA employees identified most initiatives, Nordic Sustainability also highlighted additional high-impact decarbonisation opportunities.
Subsequently, Nordic Sustainability led the development of a detailed rollout plan, applying a series of parameters to each initiative to ensure key considerations were accounted for in the execution strategy.
Result
The project achieved the following outcomes:
- TOMRA’s SBTi targets have been successfully validated.
- A comprehensive climate transition plan has been created, comprising 23 decarbonisation initiatives: six addressing Scope 1 & 2 emissions, and the remainder targeting Scope 3 emissions. The plan details time-bound actions, resource allocation, and the emission reduction potential of each initiative. To ensure effective rollout and communication, concise three-page summaries have been prepared for each initiative, enabling TOMRA to disseminate key insights to stakeholders across the organisation.
- The cumulative reduction potential was analysed under various scenarios and integrated into a custom-built decarbonisation tool. This tool allows TOMRA to adapt by incorporating new initiatives or refining assumptions to align with the most realistic scenarios.
